The Importance Of Weed Control

A clean lawn is not only a requirement for certain homes in neighborhoods with high maintenance standards: a gorgeous, well-landscaped yard will give you a sense of love and pride for your home. You will be able to point it out proudly to strangers and new friends, “That’s where I live.”

Maintaining your yard and garden can be a relaxing and meditative experience, even something to share with your children. You can have guests over without fear of judgment, invite them outside for dinner parties and bask in their compliments.

But sometimes the job is too much for an amateur. Sometimes a yard left untended for too long needs a bit of professional work. After all, weeding isn’t exactly the most fun or rewarding part of gardening. One can take pride in coaxing produce and flowers into life, but bending over in the dirt with hot sun on your back to rip up unwanted plants is not the goal of lawn or garden maintenance.

Weeds such as dandelions and clover can grow like… Well, like weeds! These dull, invasive plants can muscle out more desirable flowers and produce that you spend time and money to plant, or they can disrupt the symmetry of a clean lawn. Even if you’re the most careful and meticulous of gardeners, these plants sneak in when your back is turned and steal good soil.

On the street near where I live, there is a vacant business with a small lawn in front. In the years the building has been abandoned, the lawn has become overgrown with ugly shrubs. The plants encroach on the sidewalk and will scrape your ankles if you get too close. Weeds are not only ugly and uncomfortable, they can be dangerous. Many weeds have burrs or thorns which can pierce a child’s bare foot as they play in the yard. Some weeds are even poisonous like poison ivy or poison oak, and can be a danger to house pets which may eat the foliage in the yard.

Your home should be a place of comfort and joy, a destination your friends are excited to visit and a space you can take pride in calling your own. Your lawn is often the first thing people see when they arrive. It is a place where precious memories can be made and valuable lessons learned. Don’t let your home be overwhelmed by plants you didn’t invite! If it’s too much for one man or woman to handle, ask for help and reclaim your home from dandelions and clover.
