Winterizing Your Outdoor Furniture

winterizing outdoor furniture
|

There is still plenty of time left to enjoy the outdoors before the brutal winter temperatures hit. Although some outdoor furniture is made to withstand the changing elements, here are some tips to protecting this investment so that you can enjoy it for years to come.

Metal

Aluminum furniture is quite durable but still requires some care and maintenance to keep it looking beautiful and useable. You can easily wash aluminum furniture to clean any dirt and grime. Then, follow the cleaning step by applying an automotive wax, which helps protect the paint. If you need to, you can use car paint to touch up any areas that are scratched or damaged.

Wrought iron

This type of material is susceptible to rust. To remove any rust buildup from your wrought iron furniture, use a wire brush, and then apply a protective exterior paint specially made for wrought iron. After the paint dries, cover the furniture with a durable tarp to protect it in between uses.

Plastic

Plastic is one of the easiest materials to care for, just simply hose it down with the water hose, towel dry, and move indoors until spring. Leaving plastic exposed to the sun for prolonged periods will make it brittle and likely to break.

Fabrics

Acrylic fabrics are designed to resistant mildew, but they can still mold if the fabric is left dirty. Be sure to vacuum the fabric before you store it away for the winter, and keep it in a dry area away from moisture. To clean mold off of outdoor fabric, use a mixture of one cup bleach to one gallon of water. Be sure not to use this cleaning mixture on cotton, just use soap and water instead.

Natural materials

Teak is commonly used in outdoor furniture. It can stand up to the weather but does require an application of specialty oil at least once a year to help maintain its color. Synthetic wicker is safe to leave outdoors year round, but natural rattan should be kept in a space that is dry and dark.
