You probably know about poison ivy, oak, and sumac but did you know there is another fairly common plant that is just as perilous for the uninformed?
Wild Parsnip is a poisonous weed that grows in nearly each of the 50 states in the U.S.
Wild Parsnip is yellow and typically can grow as high as 4 feet tall. When this weed comes into contact with human skin and is exposed to sunlight, it causes a rash that feels and looks similar to a severe burn.
Earlier this summer, FOX 13 in Chicago reported on Wild Parsnip and one Iowa woman’s encounter with the weed. Wendy Prusha, from Iowa, described it as “a constant burning” that “eats away your skin.”
There are a few steps you should follow anytime you are exposed to a poisonous plant such as Wild Parsnip.
First, immediately rinse the affected area of skin using lots of water in combination with rubbing alcohol, poison plant wash or a degreasing soap such as dishwashing liquid. Be sure to rinse frequently so that the solution does not dry on the skin, potentially causing further spread of the rash. Also, scrub under your fingernails with a brush.
Next, apply wet compresses, calamine lotion or a hydrocortisone cream to the affected area. This will reduce both itching and blistering.
If you have a severe allergic reaction to a poisonous plant or have had a severe reaction to one in the past, you should call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for treatment. Particular warning signs are swelling and difficulty breathing.
