I Want my Grass to be Green Again

Nothing is more beautiful than a lush, green lawn that you can call your own. Homeowners take much pride in pouring their hard work and sweat into maintaining a green lawn. However, it is no surprise that magnificent lawns do not maintain themselves but come with much effort involved, sometimes even daunting at times. With constant changes in climate, mowing, and watering, maintaining a beautiful lawn is no simple task. For some people, maintaining a beautiful lawn is thought to not only be a time commitment beyond measure but is seen as a money pit. What if there were easier ways to maintaining lush, green grass? Maybe, just maybe, the grass could be greener on the other side.

For starters, mow less. Now, this is not advice to become lazy and should not be used as an excuse to watch the game with the guys or go fishing. At least that is what you can tell your wife, but seriously, your lawn does not need to be mowed every single Sunday morning. Organic lawn care experts recommend grass be on the taller side, measuring about three inches in length. Grass at this height helps improve moisture levels in the soil, plus, helps block weeds from receiving sunlight necessary for growth. Cutting your grass too short could result in brown grass from not retaining enough moisture in the top soil.

Resist the urge to rake your grass clippings, is probably not what you expected to hear. After all, not raking your lawn after mowing will cut your lawn maintenance duty in half! Leaving the grass clippings helps to break down and return necessary nutrients to the soil.

Another great tip is to skip the fertilizer. Sounds like the most blasphemous advice about lawn maintenance, right? Well, more importantly, do not over apply commercial fertilizers, especially during peak summer months. Fertilizers can burn your lawn or create such tender new growth that the grass struggles to grow during the hot summer months.

Last, water less. Not only will your wallet thank you, but your lawn will too. Watering is only advised three times a week. If you water more often, you risk conditioning your grass to absorb water from the top layer of the soil, instead of allowing the water to soak up by the roots. Also, the old saying that watering in the morning is best is true. By watering first thing each day, the grass can soak up the water immediately, instead of the soil harboring bacteria and promoting insect infestations.
