Deciding how to design your outdoor space can be challenging for some. After all, there are many different themes and options to choose from. Sometimes you may not be short on ideas, it could be your budget that is getting in the way or maybe you have space that you aren’t sure how to use. If this sounds like you, we have provided you with some techniques for incorporating a rustic theme into your outdoor space.
Planning
Begin by deciding how you will use the space. If you like to spend time potting plants, gardening, and such, consider incorporating a feature element that adds aesthetics, as well as function. You may want to add a gardening table that has a rustic feel. An old wooden table could serve the purpose of a garden table. If you are lucky, and already have a small wooden shed or barn, you can tie these features in to give you a rustic look with purpose.
If you prefer to use your outdoor space more for entertaining, think about the type of atmosphere that you would like to create. If you want a relaxing area people can enjoy year round, you may consider comfy seating arranged around a fire pit that can add warmth during those cooler days and nights. A wood burning fire pit creates the perfect warm, rustic feel. Even a nice barbeque area may be useful if you plan to entertain guests with food.
Creative and functional
Maybe you want to use the outdoor area as an area of your own. How does a she-shed sound to the ladies? Call it what you’d like but a small wooden shed creates a rustic appeal, plus gives you some extra storage space for outdoor lawn tools, or it could be used as a playhouse for your kids (or grandchildren) or as an office. You can have a lovely pergola added to help create some shade to provide relief during the hot summer.
Repurpose and recreate
Old wood or tin can be found at yard sales, thrift shops, antique stores, or estate sales. Repurposing these items helps save money but is ideal for providing that rustic feel. Plus, your newly created space will have a little bit of history to go along with it. Old wood can be used to build structures such as a shed, seating, or storage. Tin pieces can be used an ornamental elements in decorating your outdoor space. Other ideas are to use old rakes or shovels as wall art. People often use old wooden framed windows or a rusty crib mattress frame as artwork for a rustic feel.
