Why are There Still Weeds in my Lawn?

Cooler temperatures have not settled in just yet, so you are probably still battling those pesky weeds in your lawn. Homeowners typically despise weeds in their lawn. Common weeds are crabgrass, dandelions, and clover. These pesky weeds can sprout up anywhere and are sometimes difficult to eliminate. The upcoming winter temperatures may temporarily kill off some of these weeds, but they will certainly reappear in the spring!

Simply applying weed killer products to your lawn is not always effective. Here are some tips for keeping your lawn free of weeds.

Why Apply a Weed and Feed?

Applying a weed and feed to your lawn helps kill weeds while simultaneously providing nutrients for your grass, what little bit that you may have. Even if you only have a few weeds, resist the urge to pull them by hand, which will only break the weeds at the root, and the weeds will sprout again. Instead, try applying a weed control to your lawn, which will help kill the weeds at the roots.

Timing

When it comes to lawn care, timing is everything, and prevention is the best approach to take. Applying weed control during the spring means that seeds (from weeds) will not have a chance to germinate. As summer approaches, if you still find sprouting weeds here and there, try a spot treatment if you have small patches of weeds that are sparse throughout your lawn. You will want to avoid spreading a weed and feed during the fall, which is typically an ideal time for spreading cool-season grass seed if you desire a lush lawn during the winter.

Maintenance

Proper lawn maintenance will also help encourage your grass to grow and become healthy. Deep watering at infrequent intervals will encourage the grass roots to grow deeper. When it comes to mowing your lawn, try using one of the higher two settings on the mower. Allowing grass to grow taller will create shade for weed seeds, which helps prevent the germination process and the growth of weeds. Be sure to feed your grass too, about every 6-8 weeks during the growing period.

Commitment

To achieve the ultimate lawn, it takes time and commitment. It is not something you can start in the spring and not follow up with during the growth season. If you are like many people, life is business between work and kids with soccer practice, vacations, family outings, and such; it can be difficult to make time for lawn care.
