Tips for Spring Planting

Planting season has arrived and the time is here to “dig in” and get your garden going for the summer. Don’t wait until the last minute or all the beautiful plants may end up being picked over.

Here are a few tips to help make sure you have a healthy, productive garden this year.

Before planting

When buying seeds or plants, read the growing information to make sure you have enough space and sun to allow them to flourish. It is a good idea to plan out your garden ahead of time, and figure out where you want to plant everything before you start. Plants that grow the tallest should be in the back so that they do not block the suns rays to the other plants.

Mix an all-natural, organic plant food into the top 4-6 inches of the soil. If possible, select a plant food that has been enhanced with good bacteria, microbes, and mycorrhizae. This organic plant food can be beneficial to anything you are growing. Feel free also to add it to bulbs, container gardens, shrubs, and trees. You may also want to have your soil tested for free at your local garden center. This way, you can be sure that you are not wasting your money on plants that will not thrive in the soil’s current conditions. An imbalanced pH can significantly impact the health and growth of your plants.

During planting

Read the growing information to see how far apart you should place your plants. Dig holes as deep as the containers holding the plants. When removing plants from their containers, loosen the roots before putting plants in the hole. The top of the root ball should be level with or slightly above the soil. Be sure to water on a regular basis to foster strong root growth. Avoid over saturating the plants, however. It is best to water for longer periods at a time, but less frequently, to encourage deep, strong roots.

Once the plants are placed, add 2-3 inches of mulch on top of the soil around them. Mulch has several benefits. It cuts down on the number of weeds that will sprout up in your garden, and diminishes evaporation of soil moisture. Make sure to keep your mulch at least a couple of inches away from the stems of plants.
