How to Maintain your Lawn

Everyone has their own ideas when it comes to lawn maintenance, and your ideas may vary greatly from your neighbor’s. You may love the eye-catching, whimsical yard decorations, and your neighbor may not. Either way, there are certainly some lawn maintenance tips worth noting that everyone should be following. Your lawn maintenance company in Kingsport want to share these tips with you.

Weed prevention

The key to weed prevention is to put an end to any as soon as you spot them. Don’t wait until they take over your lawn. Pre-emergent herbicides work well at controlling weeds and preventing the seeds from sprouting. Applying this product during the early spring is best. Be sure that you follow the instructions on the package as to how to spread the herbicide safely and effectively.

If you end up applying the herbicide a little late, don’t fret. You could always spread a granular herbicide to get rid of clover, dandelions, or any other broadleaf weeds that you easily spot. As a last resort, you could always pull the weeds up by hand. Just be sure to get the root, too!

Mow regularly

Cutting your grass is an important part of maintaining a healthy lawn. But, doing it wrong will end up setting you back on track to a lush lawn. The best method to mowing your grass is not to cut it too short, and cut it often. How short is too short? It depends on the type of grass that you have, and the current weather conditions. You may need to do a little more research on the specific mowing height suitable for your grass. Just be sure not to cut it too short, because your lawn could become more susceptible to disease, drought, insects, and weeds.

Maintain your lawn equipment

One of the most important aspects of lawn care is maintaining your equipment, specifically sharpening your mower blade. A dull blade can damage grass by tearing it instead of cutting it. This could lead to frayed edges on the blades of grass, water loss or even discoloration. The rule of thumb is to sharpen your blade at the start of the mowing season. Step it up by having an extra blade, already sharpened, on hand to switch out in case you notice your blade becomes dull before the end of the season.

Water your lawn

While there are many speculations as to when the best time to water a lawn is, we stand behind the consensus that watering in the morning is the ideal time. This way, the water has a chance to soak into the soil before the sun dries it up. Watering in the evening leaves too much moisture on the ground overnight, which could lead to lawn disease.

Another good rule of thumb when it comes to watering is to water deep, and less often. This means watering your lawn about half an inch worth at a time, don’t just get the grass wet. To measure how much you are watering, set an empty cup or can out in your lawn. As you collect the water at the end of your watering session, you can measure it to keep an eye on how much water your lawn is actually getting.

Fertilize

Lawns love nitrogen. Fertilize during the fall or the spring, and be sure not to apply too much or you could risk burning your lawn. Use a slow release product that will continue working all season long.
