Winter Care tips for your Trees

We all love to enjoy the beauty of our landscape in the spring. Although there is much work to be done during those warmer months, there is certainly a good bit of work that is needed during the winter to ensure your trees remain healthy and ready for spring. The experts at Promier Tree have provided you with some tips that you can use this winter to keep your trees healthy and protected.

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction is a pruning method that is done during the winter. As a tree grows, branches expand and lengthen throughout the canopy of the tree. During the winter, crown reduction is used as a selective process to reduce weight and length from limbs throughout the tree’s canopy. The goal is to prevent broken or fallen limbs, or worse – total tree failure. The longer a limb grows, the more likely it is to cause an issue at some point. By reducing some of this strain, your tree will be safer and healthier.

Structural Pruning

Younger trees tend to benefit the most from structural pruning. This process is used to remove limbs that are rubbing other limbs, crossing, or diseased. Its purpose is to promote healthy growth and structure. Even small, seemingly insignificant defects will eventually become large problems as the tree grows. These issues can easily be rectified by structural pruning. Plus, younger trees tend to take these type of “heavy pruning” better than mature trees. In a way, trees are like people, the younger you are, the quicker you bounce back. The older we get, the longer it takes to heal, and we tend to be more resistant to change. Trees are a lot like people in this way.

Deadwooding

Deadwooding is the process of removing old, damaged limbs that are dead. It is easiest to do this during the winter when you can see the tree’s entire structure. It is important to remove these dead areas of the tree so that it can remain strong and sturdy in the spring and summer rainstorms. These type of work is better left to the pros since it often involves reaching the very tip-top of the tree. Most homeowners do not possess the safety equipment to do this type of pruning.

Pest Management

The winter months are an ideal time to apply pest management solutions to suppress insects that may overwinter on the tree’s foliage. Horticultural oil is commonly used for this purpose. The upcoming spring months is the perfect time to start a routine pest control service to ensure the emerging insects do not affect your trees or other landscape.

Tree care is often a job better left to the professionals such as the certified arborist on staff at Promier Tree. We possess the knowledge and skill to conduct every job safely and ensure your trees remain healthy.
