Whether you maintain your landscape yourself, or you pay a professional lawn care company to take care of it for you, the last thing you want is for your beautiful green grass to be ruined by moles and gophers. Your Kingsport lawn care professionals at Promier Landscapes has got some tips for you to help get rid of these pests.
Noise
Believe it or not, but gophers do not like loud noise. Adding wind chimes or other noisy objects around your yard may help ward off these pests. You could even leave a radio on to add constant noise. Just be sure the volume is not too loud as to disturb your neighbors.
Pet Waste
If you have outdoor pets such as a dog or cat, their waste could help deter gophers and moles from entering your lawn. Repurposing your pet’s waste could also help in warding off voles from digging holes all over your landscape. These pests are deterred from pet waste just as much as humans. Place your pet’s waste at or near the entry and exit points around your lawn to drive these pests away from your property.
Plants
Certain plants emit an odor that gophers and moles do not like. These plants include Euphor-bia lathyris or “Gopher Surge,” which repel gophers. Castor bean, Crown imperial, and Narcissus are known to ward off moles. Plant these around your yard to keep moles and gophers from emerging.
Poison
Our last recommendation, although quite dangerous, is poison. While our other tips are rather natural and harmless, poison, if not distributed or stored properly, could harm you, your family or your pets. The best way to get rid of gophers or moles is to eliminate their food source – grubs. There are pesticides that kill grubs but you also need to bait the moles, or they will end up digging even more tunnels in your yard in an attempt to search for food. Mole Patrol is popular mole bait that you can use for this method. The bait resembles a grub or worm, and once the moles eat it, they will die. Insecticides such as Talstar or Permethrin can be spread over your entire lawn to kill grubs and worms, eliminating the mole’s food source. Whole Control is a natural repellant that will also help prevent mole or vole activity.
Scents
Like humans, moles and voles do not like strong scents such as fish. The next time you return from a fishing trip, leave any scraps inside of the tunnels, and it will repel the moles and voles. Or you can use any leftovers from your fish dinner to add to the tunnels.
Coffee Grounds
Gophers and moles do not like the scent of coffee. After you enjoy your coffee in the morning, sprinkle the used coffee grounds over any gopher or mole tunnels that you find throughout your lawn. It’s a good way to get rid of these varmints without the use of chemicals or pesticides.
