Tips for Fall Tree Care

Do you have any trees on your property? If so, be wary of fall, which is a crucial, and potentially dangerous, season for your trees. High temperatures over a prolonged period of time can make trees more vulnerable to infestations by pests or disease. Once the weather starts to cool down, you want to help any trees on your property to recover from the heat of summertime—fortifying them and readying them for the frigid temperatures and winds of winter.

To prepare your trees for the winter and have them healthy and looking great for the spring, follow this list of fall tree care tips, as recommended by your Kingsport arborists at Promier Tree.

  • Fall fertilization: Between the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter, the soil surrounding your trees can become dehydrated, depriving your tree of needed nutrients. Replace those nutrients during the more temperate weather of the fall by applying a slow-release fertilizer, which also will fortify the tree against potential damage from disease, insects, and extreme weather.
  • Did someone say hydration?: Fall is a prime time to water your trees thoroughly, making sure they remain hydrated throughout the winter when the ground and any water in the ground are likely to freeze. You can make sure your trees have enough hydration for the winter ahead by quenching the roots of the trees. If you are a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to maintaining your trees and outdoor landscape, consider investing in an injection probe, which can deliver water that is distributed as deep as 12 inches into the soil. This subsurface watering is recommended for trees and shrubs that lack irrigation systems, as well as recently planted trees and any trees that may require temporary relief from drought stress.
  • Well-timed planting: You may not think it as trees are dropping their leaves, but fall is an ideal time to plant new trees, because of the lower temperatures and diminished risk of stress for the fledgling trees from sun scorch, drought, or extreme temperatures. Planting trees at this time of year gives them an opportunity to accumulate root mass before they prepare to go dormant for the winter.
  • Winter is coming: This time of year can do serious damage to your trees. Extreme weather such as snow, high winds, and bitterly cold temperatures can place inordinate amounts of stress on your trees. To prepare them, you should prune them, as well as taking measures such as the installation of braces and cables, to protect them from damage or significant injury from snow and ice.
