Cooler temperatures are on their way, we hope! After a long, hot, humid summer, I think we all agree that we are ready for some cool, crisp air. As we know all too well here in East Tennessee, the weather will change in a snap as brightly colored leaves decorate all of the trees. Your Kingsport tree care experts have answers to some of the most commonly asked questions regarding tree care in the fall.

Why do my trees lose leaves during early fall?

In our area, trees tend to start shedding their leaves in October or a bit later. If leaves shed in August or September, this could be a sign of a problem that needs assessing by our Kingsport certified arborists.

What does my maple tree look like it is dying?

If you’ve spotted dead limbs on your maple tree, it may not be kicking the bucket just yet. Instead, your maple tree may need some maintenance, trimming or other TLC to get it back in shape and healthy again.

My evergreen is dying from the bottom up. Can it be saved?

Evergreens are supposed to be green year-round, hence their name. But, have you ever noticed your evergreen start turning brown at the bottom? This could be one of three things, it needs water, it has a pest infestation or disease, or it is going through the natural process of shedding old needles for further growth.

Should I fertilize my trees in the fall?

Yes! In fact, fall is the perfect time to fertilize your trees and your lawn. It is important, however, that you apply the right type of fertilizer that is suitable for your lawn and trees. If you aren’t sure, just ask someone that works at your local garden shop.

What is the deal with all the webs in my trees?

You may be relieved to learn that those huge webs in your trees actually aren’t even caused by spiders at all. Instead, they are caused by tent caterpillers. The good news is that the caterpillars nor their webs cause any damage to the trees. But, you may want to remove them to improve the look of your trees.

When is the best time to plant trees?

The general rule of thumb is to plant evergreen, maple, and fruit trees are during the fall. However, some trees do better when planted in the spring. Just be sure to ask your garden center which trees are best for fall planting before you actually dig a hole and plant one. Otherwise, mid-August to mid-October is ideal for planting trees in Kingsport.

Should I get my trees topped?

Tree topping is not the same as pruning. Tree topping actually is harmful to your trees. Instead, hire a certified arborist in Kingsport to properly trim your trees. Topping not only harms the tree but also makes them look quite unattractive.
