Gearing up for the Last Mow of the Season

Last mow of the season
|

The time of year has arrived when you should be preparing your lawn and plants for the upcoming cold season. Tidying up your garden now not only will make for a clean look throughout the dormant season but also positions your plants to grow well the following spring. While tending to your garden, shrubs, and other plants as part of your pre-winter preparation, make sure you do not neglect your lawn. Follow this guide from the Tri-Cities lawn experts at Promier Landscapes as you gear up for the final mow of the season.

Trimming Your Grass in Kingsport Right Before Winter Helps It Stay Healthier During the Cooler Months.

Failing to mow your lawn one last time before the arrival of Old Man Winter can create a set of conditions where a moldy fungus can form on your turf during the cold-weather months. Mowing your grass a final time before winter, preferably to the recommended height for your variety of turf with sharp blades, also will keep your yard looking nice all winter long.

As a general rule of thumb, you want to schedule two or three mows prior to the first good frost of the winter season. Each time you make one of these final mows, you want to reduce the height of the mower blades by increments, cutting back the lawn to a grass height between 2 and 2 ½ inches as it prepares to go dormant until spring. This is the recommended height because it is not tall enough to potentially harbor snow mold, but not so short that it is stressed excessively by cold weather. And remember, never cut more than one-third of the height of your grass during a single mow.

Your Grass Will Keep Growing Until Daily Temperatures Dip Below 50 Degrees Fahrenheit.

When this happens will depend on where you live. People in Florida or southern California, for example, may need to keep mowing their yards throughout the entire year. In locations such as Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol in east Tennessee, the temperature change occurs sometime in November although an unseasonably warm fall could push the growing stoppage date back to early December.

While you are preparing for your final mow of the season, why not get ready to fertilize while you’re at it? Fall is the best time of year to fertilize your lawn, both for its optimum health and look heading into the new growing season.
