Mowing your grass a final time before winter, preferably to the recommended height for your variety of turf with sharp blades, also will keep your yard looking nice all winter long.
As a general rule of thumb, you want to schedule two or three mows prior to the first good frost of the winter season. Each time you make one of these final mows, you want to reduce the height of the mower blades by increments, cutting back the lawn to a grass height between 2 and 2 ½ inches as it prepares to go dormant until spring. This is the recommended height because it is not tall enough to potentially harbor snow mold, but not so short that it is stressed excessively by cold weather. And remember, never cut more than one-third of the height of your grass during a single mow.

When this happens will depend on where you live. People in Florida or southern California, for example, may need to keep mowing their yards throughout the entire year.
