4 Tips to Maintain Healthy Trees and Shrubs This Summer

If you planted young trees or shrubs in the spring, you may find that keeping them healthy during the summer can be a bit of a challenge, especially considering the hot, dry summer weather we typically experience here in East Tennessee. You probably want to preserve your investment and the beauty that it adds to your property, by taking care of it and making sure it lasts the long haul. Certified arborists in Kingsport at Promier Tree want to share with you four tips on how to maintain healthy trees and shrubs all season long.

1. Water, water, water

Young trees need frequent watering, although well-established trees usually can survive on whatever rainfall we receive. However, young trees, especially during their first summer, need plenty of water. You can tell if your young tree is receiving enough water or not because its leaves will shrivel and drop off it is thirsty. Young trees do best by receiving an average of 5-10 gallons of water a week. So, if it rains quite a bit, you may not need to water it, but otherwise, plan on watering your tree every couple of days or so.

2. Use a gator

We aren’t talking about those snapping gators from Florida, but gators are plastic-sleeved devices that attach to the base of the tree that will continuously water the tree in your absence. This is a convenient way of watering so that you don’t actually have to drag the water hose or a heavy watering can over to water your tree. Watering gators slowly release water to keep your tree hydrated. Also, automated sprinkler systems are ideal for watering just the right amount, plus you can program a timer for added convenience.

3. Add mulch

Adding organic mulch around the tree protects the roots, and retains moisture, which keeps the tree from drying out. But, be careful not to add mulch directly around the base of the tree, which causes crown rot. Instead, spread about 2- to 3-inches of mulch along the drip line of the tree.

4. Stake or not?

Usually, newly planted trees don’t need to be staked unless the weather is expected to be quite windy. Otherwise, a little bit of gentle swaying helps the tree become better established. Just be sure to keep an eye on the weather, and if it is going to be stormy and windy, you may want to add stakes during that time, but remove them after the storm.
