Myth 1: All pools are built using the same materials

Durability comes at a price; certain materials will cost more during construction, but those materials also will last longer, saving you money in the long run. Other types of materials may look better, but entail more work by the homeowner when it comes to maintaining and cleaning the pool. Myth 2: Everyone constructs pools the same way
Tennessee law requires a contractor to have one of two types of licenses to install a swimming pool. The first is a home improvement license, which can be obtained by anyone provided they present a $10,000 bond for liability purposes and pay a $250 license fee, then complete all the necessary paperwork. However, a contractor with a home improvement license only can write contracts worth a maximum of $25,000. The second license, a contractor’s license, requires the same bond and fee, but also entails passing a written exam and having a financial statement review conducted by a Certified Public Accountant. The holder of a contractor’s license can write contracts on projects over $25,000.
Now for the bad news… none of this licensure guarantees the contractor you hire knows anything about installing a pool. And if you do find a contractor with prior experience with pools, they might not have the attention to detail you want. Maybe they don’t use high-quality materials. Your pool is an investment in your home—and if there are problems, it can be a major drain on your finances. Ask any prospective pool builder to review their experience, construction process, techniques, and preferred materials before beginning work.
