Why Fall is the best time to Plant Trees

You’ve been considering planting a tree for some time now, but fall is here, the weather has started to turn cold, and you might think it is too late. Guess what? That is one of the most common misconceptions made about planting trees. Lots of people assume that, because it’s fall, it will be too cold for you to plant a tree and have it thrive. Promier Landscapes wants to bust this myth for you and explain why this time of year could be exactly what you’ve been waiting for when it comes to planting a tree.

Why plant in the fall?

A seedling planted in the fall will have more time to establish a root system and develop before the warmer seasons come around again. Also, trees are dormant in the winter. This means a newly planted tree won’t require as much care.

The advantages to fall tree planting in Johnson City don’t end there. Summer is a dry season, but the fall’s rainier climate helps any new trees establish themselves. When the air temperatures are cooler than the soil, new root growth is encouraged without new top growth.

Follow these tips when planting trees in the fall

Promier Landing knows that planting your own tree can have sentimental value for a home or family. That’s why we also wanted to give you some tips on how to plant in the fall.

Don’t wait until the ground is frozen solid. Check your ground with a spade. If it goes fully into the ground, then you still can plant your tree. Pre-dig! Pre-dig your holes before the tree arrives at your home, and store the soil somewhere that it won’t begin to harden. If you place it in a shed or garage, it should be fine. You should mulch and water immediately after planting your trees. Mulch will help your new tree retain moisture and help prevent frost heaving, which refers to what happens to a tree when the freezing and thawing cycle does damage to its root system.

Don’t plant your tree in a pot and wait. Promier Landscapes sees people who choose to do this and wait until they think it’s warm enough to put the tree in the ground. We don’t encourage this because no pot can provide enough aeration. The constricting space of the pot also runs the risk of it cracking because of the change in temperatures in combination with accumulating moisture. Not sure if it’s warm enough? We often tell people that if the trees in your yard have leaves left, then you still can plant new trees.
