Pre-dig your holes before the tree arrives at your home, and store the soil somewhere that it won’t begin to harden. If you place it in a shed or garage, it should be fine. You should mulch and water immediately after planting your trees. Mulch will help your new tree retain moisture and help prevent frost heaving, which refers to what happens to a tree when the freezing and thawing cycle does damage to its root system.
Don’t plant your tree in a pot and wait. Promier Landscapes sees people who choose to do this and wait until they think it’s warm enough to put the tree in the ground. We don’t encourage this because no pot can provide enough aeration.
