4 Tips for Young Tree Care

Caring for young trees
|

Trees are low-maintenance for the most part, but they aren’t maintenance-free by any means. As self-sufficient as they seem, trees still need some care from time to time, especially young or newly planted trees. Routine tree care can help you maintain beautiful, healthy trees for years to come. ISA-Certified arborists in the Tri-Cities at Promier Tree have four tips to share with you on how to care for young trees.

1. Keep it clean

Just like the inside of your home needs cleaning, trees need a clean area to thrive. Remove fallen leaves or branches from around the tree trunk. Keep any yard ornaments, toys, or landscaping tools away from the base of the tree. Also, inspect the base of the tree for any signs of disease or insects. If you suspect either, contact an ISA-Certified arborist in Johnson City today for an evaluation.

2. Mulch

Mulching is an essential part of maintaining healthy trees. Not only does mulch help protect the roots, but it also retains moisture, which helps your tree stay hydrated during dry weather. Just be sure to add about 2” of mulch around the tree, making sure not to pile the mulch up along the base of the tree. Adding a fresh layer of mulch each spring or at the start of the summer is a good time to add this protection for your trees.

3. Prune

Pruning usually is best to do during the dormant season, but sometimes dead, dying, or diseased branches need to be pruned even during the growing season to prevent a hazard or to preserve the tree’s health. You may be able to prune young trees yourself; although we recommend contacting the pros to handle it for you. Pruning is best left to the pros because we know how to remove limbs and branches without jeopardizing the tree’s health, or risking the safety of anything or anyone around.

4. Water

Well-established trees usually can get by with only receiving enough water from natural rainfall. However, young or newly planted trees require much more regular watering. Once you plant a young tree, be sure to water it at least once every couple of days. Young trees require about 5-10 gallons of water a week. You may need to make adjustments to your sprinkler system, if you have one, to ensure your young trees receive enough water each week.
