Tip 1: Do any planting ASAP
In the past, we’ve talked about the advantages of planting bulbs in the fall, but November also is a fine time to plant trees and shrubs. The roots are heartier than you think and can continue to grow as long as the soil temperature stays above 40 degrees. Moreover, soil stays warm for quite some time after air temperatures drop.
Tip 2: Look over your plants
You might be done mowing, weeding, and harvesting any fruits and vegetables, but you still need to keep an eye on your plants. Look for problems such as possible safety risks or evidence of disease or pest infestation. Certain plants may need some additional watering as well before temperatures consistently drop below freezing.
Tip 3: Clear dead foliage
When the growing season is over, and plants go dormant, it can be difficult to know what plants need to be removed and which ones you should leave. Perennials will come back year after year, but did you know that certain perennials like coneflowers and black-eyed Susans continue to produce seeds for birds throughout the winter? Sedum also can add visual interest to your winter landscape. If you’ve been growing hostas, you can choose to trim them or keep the leaves as they are. If you opt for the latter, you will need to trim your hostas in the spring to allow room for new foliage to grow.
Tip 4: Hardscapes and furniture
Fall is an ideal time to spray down any hardscaping elements in your landscape, as well as outdoor furniture—all these items accumulated mold, dirt, and pollen during the spring and summer. To make the job easier, you might consider investing in or renting a pressure washer. Fall also represents the best opportunity to winterize your sprinkler system to prevent your underground pipes from freezing.
