February Lawn Care Checklist

February lawn care checklist
|

It’s only February, but we know that spring is just around the corner. There are several preparations that need to be completed for a lush, full lawn and garden. Regardless of what Punxsutawney Phil has to say about when spring will arrive, now is the time to get prepared for the blooming season. To help guide you in making the necessary preparations, the lawn care professionals in Johnson City at Promier Landscapes has created a February lawn care checklist.

1. Check Your Trees and Shrubs

Since your trees and shrubs have been enduring the harsh winter weather, it is time to give them a little love and attention. First, prune your rose bushes as soon as you see the buds begin to swell. Next, prune trees and shrubs with apparent winter damage to the leaves or limbs. Finally, make sure you are still protecting your trees and shrubs from frost by covering them, if possible, with a burlap bag. When you follow these steps, your trees and shrubs should return to their beautiful blooming selves when warmer temperatures arrive.

2. Look at Your Lawn

Looking at your lawn may seem silly, but when you really investigate your yard, you will notice that it is still alive and growing under the surface and will need a little attention in the late winter. First, weeds are not friendly plants for your yard and can be addressed with a post-emergence herbicide. Secondly, as fun as the crunching sound of frozen grass under your feet can be, your grass is very delicate when it is frozen. Walking across it when it is covered with ice could damage your lawn, creating a high risk of dead patches of grass. Finally, applying a pre-emergent herbicide to control crabgrass can be added when your soil temperature reaches 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Maintenance

General clean up and maintenance of your lawn, such as removing dead leaves and fallen limbs, are always needed to prepare your lawn for spring. When the ground begins to thaw, it is time to till your garden in preparation for planting seeds for a new spring crop. It is also a good time to sharpen your garden tools and lawnmower blades to make it easier for your landscaping routine. Another great tip is to test your motorized equipment such as the lawnmower, weed eater, power saw, and any additional power tools you use in your yard. If maintenance is needed, you should have time to get it completed before you begin your seasonal yard work.

4. Check on Your Annuals and Container Plants

Whether inside or outside, your plants need to be checked and shown special attention as well. You can keep your annuals planted in containers to protect them from freezing temperatures, but remember to water them if there is no rain in the forecast.
