How to Prevent your Grass from Turning Brown

Brown and green grass

Certain types of grass, like Bermuda, turn brown and look dead during the colder months. But, did you know that brown grass can be prevented with proper care and maintenance? You might have already completed your last mow of the season, but that doesn’t mean that you can hang up your gardening gloves just yet. Find out how to prevent your grass from turning brown this fall.

Adjust Watering Schedule

Watering your lawn is most important during the hot, dry summer months. But, you may need to adjust your watering schedule during the fall, especially if it isn’t raining often. If you have a sprinkler system, be sure to adjust the schedule accordingly so that your grass gets enough water even as the temperatures cool off. If need be, water your grass with a hose and sprinkler as needed throughout the fall season.

Eliminate Weeds

Weeds are notorious for sprouting up all over East Tennessee lawns each spring, although some weeds linger into the cooler months. Ideally, applying a pre-emergent to your lawn each spring will help prevent weeds from sprouting. But, if you don’t have that many, you could remove them by hand.

Get Rid of Pests

Chinch bugs, grubs, and other pests can wreak havoc on your lawn as they are on the hunt for food and water. Left untreated, pests could drain your soil of its nutrients, causing your grass, shrubs, and other plants to dry up and die. While you may be tempted to immediately reach for insecticides, thatch removal and proper moisture levels can help prevent lawn pests from stealing the soil’s nutrients. For getting rid of grubs, check to see how bad it is by using a shovel to remove a 1-by-1 square foot patch of turf. If you see more than 10 grubs per square foot, this could indicate an infestation that should be addressed by professional lawncare experts in Kingsport.

Avoid Pet Waste

It’s convenient to let your pet outside just by opening the door, allowing them to pick their spot to use. But, pet urine and feces can damage your lawn and kill your grass. Either mark off a specific spot to train your pet to use, or take your dog on walks when they need a bathroom break. Just be a good neighbor and scoop the poop!

Fertilize and Aerate

Fall is the ideal time to fertilize and aerate your lawn. Fertilizer reacts best when the soil is moist, and the grass is not stressed. Aerate when the weather is cool and rain is in the forecast. Our Kingsport grass cutting pros recommend getting your soil tested as well. These results can help you determine the nutrients that your soil needs.
