Tree Care, What to do Before a Winter Storm

These days, it seems too cold to be outside, let alone actually doing anything productive while you are out. Keep in mind, however, that trees on your property may still require your attention, especially during the winter. Doing so can help prevent tree emergencies or damage to your tree or property. As winter weather approaches, take these tips into consideration to prevent a tree emergency.

Removing snow and ice

Resist the urge to shake a tree or its limbs to remove accumulated snow and ice, as this could cause damage to the tree. Also, since plants are rather flexible, shaking the branches to remove snow or ice would cause the branches to snap back rather quickly, which can damage the tree’s circulatory system, not to mention cause harm to yourself if the branch strikes you.

Remove broken limbs

Snow and ice can add some serious weight to tree branches to the point of breakage. If this occurs, have the broken tree branch removed from the tree canopy in a safe manner, or call the experts at Promier Tree to handle the job for you. Just be sure if you attempt this job yourself, that you do so by adhering to the necessary safety protocol and are careful not to prune the branch incorrectly or it could result in damage to the tree.

Prevent damage from snow and ice

To make life simple, you could avoid snow and ice damage by having your trees pruned properly before a snowstorm occurs by removing dead or hazardous limbs. Trees that are most susceptible to damage during a winter storm are upright evergreens, like the juniper tree, and clump trees such as birch. Also, do not let the age of your trees fool you; older trees are more likely to succumb to snow and ice damage than a younger tree.
