It’s officially the dead of winter. We even had a white Christmas here in East Tennessee! These freezing temperatures probably have you thinking that you can shelf your lawn care needs until spring. But even in the dead of winter, there is work to be done so that your lawn flourishes with beauty and vibrant colors this spring. Find out on our newest blog today what your lawn needs this January.
Prune trees and shrubs
Experts agree that pruning trees and shrubs during dormancy is ideal. Routine pruning helps trees maintain their shape, promotes healthy growth in the spring and removes dead branches that could otherwise pose a danger if they fell on their own. Fruit trees and berry bushes should be trimmed during the winter as well. For more information about tree care or to schedule an assessment with an ISA-certified arborist, contact Promier Tree today.
Maintain mulched beds
Harsh winter temperatures aren’t kind to plants and landscape. Mulch provides protection to plants and shrubs by insulating, providing nutrients, and retaining moisture. Most homeowners add new mulch in the spring because plants need more water during this time as temperatures heat up, and it looks fresh and new. Some landscapes may require mulching in the fall as well, but if you only mulch during the spring, just keep an eye out on your beds during the winter. You may need to add some mulch to protect their root systems and keep your beds looking good.
When to turn soil
Once the soil defrosts, consider turning the soil to uncover pest eggs that could pose a threat to your plants and beds during the spring. It’s a good idea to use this time to prep your soil for spring and get a head start on the growing season.
Protect trees from snow and ice
Don’t worry. You’re not too late to this game! Ice is usually fine as it accumulates on trees, but you should avoid the temptation to break it off branches as it could cause branches to snap. In the event that we get more snow this winter in Kingsport, gently knock snow off tree branches if it looks as if a significant amount piles up and is causing the branches to bend.
Plan your design for spring
One of the biggest landscaping mistakes you can make is waiting too late to plan your design (like while you’re in line to buy your spring plants) or not having a design at all. You could end up overspending and purchasing too many plants or end up wasting your money by planting the wrong plants in undesirable conditions. You’ve got plenty of time right now to gaze at your landscape through the window while sipping your coffee and dream up your design for spring. Do any research you need to conduct, write down your findings, and decide what you want to purchase and plant come spring. It will save you time and money in the long run!
