The weather is starting to get warmer, and spring will be here before we know it. That means it’s time to plan your first lawn fertilization of the year. Not all types of grass are the same, but, generally speaking, you should fertilize your lawn twice: once in the spring and again in the fall. Promier Landscapes wants your lawn to be healthy and look great this year. That’s why our professional landscapers composed this ultimate how-to guide for fertilizing your lawn in Kingsport.

Lawn Fertilization Is About Timing

Ideally, all lawns should get fertilized during the spring, but that doesn’t mean every lawn should be fertilized at the same time. The best general rule is that you want to fertilize when your lawn has resumed active growing. This way, your lawn can actually utilize the nutrients contained in the fertilizer.

Tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass are grasses that are considered cool-season turfgrasses, meaning they grow most aggressively when the weather is between 60 and 75 degrees. They thrive during the spring and the fall and tend to decline during the heat and humidity of the summer. You want to apply fertilization in the early spring for cooler-weather varieties of grass.

By contrast, warm-season turfgrasses—Bermuda, for example—enters its aggressive growth period when the temperature is in the range of 80-95 degrees. These grasses also go dormant after the frost and stay that way until temperatures get consistently warm enough in the late spring, which is also the ideal time to apply this type of grass.

Why Fertilize in the Spring?

Fertilization is an important step to having a healthy, lush lawn. Fertilizing means you have a well-fed lawn with a strong root system that can withstand heat, cold, drought, foot traffic, and other potential stressors.

For lawns that should be fertilized in early spring, you want to apply the fertilizer between February and April—ideally around the time of your first mow of the season. For warmer-weather turfgrasses, you can apply the fertilizer in the time frame between April and the beginning of June.

You also want to fertilize your lawn in the fall, at some point between August and November, and preferably as close to the start of winter weather as possible. Fall fertilization prepares your lawn for the rigors of winter, strengthening roots and increasing the surplus of nitrogen in your soil.
