Will Weed Killer Work when it’s Cold?

Weed killer in winter
|

You felt the temperatures rise and enjoyed the warm weather at the start of March here in Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol in East Tennessee. The weather won’t stay that way. The temperatures and conditions can fluctuate wildly here in March and April. As the growing season nears, you may consider applying weed control treatments on your Kingsport lawn. In this article, Promier Landscapes explores when weed killer will work—and when it won’t because of the weather.

When it comes to weed killer, 40 is the magic number

As in 40 degrees Fahrenheit. When the daytime temperature falls below this threshold, weed killer usually is ineffective. This is because the plant will not absorb an herbicide spray in weather colder than that. Why does this occur? Any weed killer is a systemic herbicide that is absorbed by plants during the process of photosynthesis. As the weather turns colder, plants stop photosynthesis, cease respiration and enter a dormant state comparable to hibernation. In other words, if your weeds have gone dormant due to dropping temperatures, a weed killer will not work.

What about winter weeds?

Certain species of weeds in Kingsport flourish in the winter: annual bluegrass, shepherd’s curse, chickweed, and others. Your best course of action is to spray these winter weeds in the fall when they first begin to sprout. You can spot these weeds more easily after your grass goes dormant for the cold weather; by then, weeds will appear as new patches of green in your yard.

Not all weed killers are created equal

Certain weed killers can get the job done but run the risk of harming your lawn, too. Bermuda grass, for example, can be especially susceptible to certain popular varieties of herbicide. That’s why we recommend trusting a professional landscaper in Johnson City for weed control services. Our experts have years of experience dealing with all types of landscapes. We can identify your specific species of weeds, your grass type and choose a weed killer that will take care of the former without harming the latter.

What about killing brush?

Overgrown brush can be a real eyesore in your landscape while also providing a possible harboring ground for unwanted pests. You can use a brush killer without risking your grass, but as another variety of systemic herbicides, a brush killer will not work unless you spray at ideal temperatures—at or above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
