When cultivating a garden, it’s important you install plants that are going to thrive in that environment. If you live in Bristol, Johnson City, Kingsport and the surrounding areas in East Tennessee, there are a variety of plants that can flourish season after season. These are called perennials.

Perennials are already adapted to their climate. That means, once you plant them in your yard or garden, they have a better chance at not just surviving, but thriving. Not sure where to start?

Read on as our team of expert landscapers at Promier Landscapes compiled a list of five perennials you may want to consider.

  • Bee balm: Also known as wild bergamot, bee balm attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and, as the name suggests, bees. This tubular perennial grows in a variety of colors like pink, purple, red and white. Bee balm blooms in the summertime and has an extremely fragrant scent. This perennial grows best in full sunlight, and can be planted during the spring or fall.
  • Passionflower vine: Also known as maypop, purple passionflower or wild apricot, this perennial is fast growing with climbing and trailing stems. It’s also Tennessee’s state wildflower. As you might expect given its name, passionflower vine has beautiful, large, complex flowers. Its color can vary from light purple and blue to bright red, pink and orange. If you avoid pruning the vines, they can grow up to 30 feet in length. It’s best to plant this vine in a place where it won’t crowd out other plants because it can be invasive.
  • Trumpet vine: The trumpet vine is a gorgeous flowering plant with, you guessed it, trumpet-shaped blossoms. This fast-growing vine has lush, green foliage to complement the eye-catching flowers. The trumpet vine produces clusters of orange, red, or yellow blooms that bloom from midsummer to fall, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden. The vine has the ability to climb and cling to structures, giving it the ability to add a vertical element to your yard. This hardy and low-maintenance plant is an ideal addition to any landscape.
  • Butterfly milkweed: The butterfly milkweed is a stunning plant known for its vibrant orange flowers and its ability to attract a myriad of bees and other pollinators. The bright flowers bloom from mid-summer to early fall. Along with its visual appeal, butterfly milkweed serves as a crucial host plant for monarch butterflies, providing nourishment for their caterpillars. Adding this plant to your garden helps support the overall biodiversity of your local ecosystem.
  • Ageratum: Also known as flossflower or whiteweed, ageratum is a flowering perennial with soft, fluffy clusters of small flowers. It’s known as an easy-to-grow, old-fashioned bloomer that usually sports purple or blue flowers, although it’s also available in pink and white. Ageratum also attracts butterflies with its nectar-rich blossoms.
