Can Planting Herbs Control Weeds?

Planting herbs
|

Having an abundance of weeds in your yard is not only annoying to deal with, but it can make your property look generally unkempt and decrease your curb appeal. You can pull weeds and apply herbicide, but one easy way to control your weed population is by growing useful herbs. Having a variety of herbs on hand in your garden can not only help freshen up your cooking or complete a nice cocktail but can help keep pesky, unwanted weeds at bay. Read on to learn more about how herbs can counter your population of weeds.

How do herbs limit weeds? Science!

Like some of the plants we usually refer to as weeds, certain herbs release a chemical that discourages other plants from growing nearby. The powerful fragrance of plants such as caraway seed, wild garlic, and fennel also comes from chemicals that help deter weeds. By implementing some mixture of these herbs, you can fend off the growth of bothersome weeds.

3 Herbs that can control weed growth

Mint

Mint can proliferate as quickly and persistently as the most invasive species of weeds. The stems of the mint plant root easily and it reproduces rapidly through its runners. Mint is shade-tolerant and stays fairly well confined by any hardscaping you may have in your yard. Mint can grow up to a few feet tall, so it helps to keep shorter weeds controlled. There are multiple varieties of the mint plant you can grow, and every type of mint has an abundance of potential uses in the kitchen.

Oregano

Like a common weed, the oregano plant drops tons of seed and grows runners. This means it will grow quickly in any sunny spot. Oregano is a drought-tolerant herb and can grow even in rocky soil. Fresh oregano is a great addition to any tomato-centric dish, as well as olive oil-based dishes.

Parsley

A parsley plant can be a tad difficult to get started, but once it decides to take root and has a few leaves, you’re smooth sailing. Parsley plants drop lots of seeds, eventually forming thick layers of leaves that are nearly impenetrable to common weeds. The plant prefers the sun but can handle some shade. Parsley plants do need some extra hydration, so help them out with a drink of water every week or so. Parsley is a great refreshing herb that can help you make tabbouleh, pesto, chimichurri sauce, or a variety of other dishes.
