Suitable Shrubs for your Climate

Suitable shrubs

Shrubs, especially this time of year, can add beauty, vibrancy and shade to your outdoor landscape. There is a veritable universe of shrubs to select from, and your best options for which shrubs to plant should be based on your local climate, also known as the Hardiness Zone.

Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City and the surrounding areas in East Tennessee belong to  Hardiness Zones 6b (minimum average temperature of -5 to 0 degrees Fahrenheit) and 7a (minimum average temperature of 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit). At Promier Landscapes, we offer many shrub services. From planting to removing and from protecting to mulching, we can do it all.

Let’s take a deeper look at some shrub options best suited to grow and thrive in the Tri-Cities area.

  1. Hydrangeas – An incredibly fast-growing plant that is ideal for filling large empty spaces in your garden or backyard. They gain 3-4 feet in both height and width in just a few years. These shrubs are perfect for serving as a border, or as an eye-catching focal point in a flower bed. Their flowers sport beautiful hues of white, pink, blue and light green during the summer and early fall months. Be sure, however, to plant them in areas that get direct sunlight for no more than half the day, as hydrangeas thrive in partial shade, moist soil and rainy climates.
  2. Azaleas – Like hydrangeas, their flowers are colorfully eye-popping in the warmer months. These shrubs are also pest-resistant; nearby deer or rabbits tend to not eat them. They are best planted in areas not exposed to strong winds, extended direct sunlight, and dry soils.
  3. Spirea – The most popular and long-lasting of all the shrubs. These versatile beauties come in many varieties and can be used for very small areas of 2 feet or less, or large areas of up to 10 feet. Spireas require the lowest maintenance of all the shrubs on this list, as they are not prone to insect infestations, require very little water and can easily withstand extended direct sunlight. They also make for perfect borders, groundcover and hedges.
  4. Viburnums – Considered the hardiest of all shrubs, these low-maintenance plants stand up excellently to all types of weather, require little watering and most pests seem to pose no threat to them. The beautiful flowers on these shrubs bloom during the spring and summer, while fruit will grow on them in the winter, providing lovely colors when other plants will not. These stress-free shrubs can grow and thrive virtually anywhere in your garden.
  5. Butterfly Bushes – These beauties are the best attractors of pollinators: butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Butterfly bushes are unique in the sense that they not only exude vibrant colors, but also amazing scents that fill your garden. Be careful, however, as these shrubs happen to also be among the least hardy on our list, being prone to damage from over-pruning, overexposure to direct sunlight or being invaded by pests.
  6. Honeysuckle Bush – Birds and hummingbirds cannot get enough of the amazing nectar from these bushes. Garden pests like rabbits and deer absolutely love paying these shrubs a visit when they grow. Honeysuckle bushes tend to become large, so be sure to plant them in a part of your yard with plenty of space to grow up and out.
  7. Juniper Bush – The picture of versatility, the Juniper is inexpensive, easy to maintain, but also thrives well in heat and in cold weather. It’s one of the few shrubs that actually maintains its colors throughout the year. They offer reliable evergreen color and texture to just about any garden or backyard. Just be sure to avoid over-pruning, which can make this shrub turn brown, wilt or even die.
