Hardscaping vs. Softscaping: What’s the Difference?

Ideally, elements in a landscape design are perfectly balanced. The two essential elements that make up a landscape design are called “hardscaping” and “softscaping.” What do these terms mean?

Our Kingsport lawn care specialists at Promier Landscapes explain on today’s blog:

  • Hardscaping — all the inorganic, hard components of the landscape, including concrete, stones, bricks, a fire pit, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, and plant risers.
  • Softscaping — all the organic material in the landscape, including grass, flowers, mulch, shrubs, trees and other plants.
  • Landscaping — includes both hardscaping and softscaping — the entire yard and outdoor design. Fortunately, lawn care professionals like ours in Kingsport are experienced in combining the two components, and they are knowledgeable about various landscaping elements, from perennial and annual flowers to wooden patios, concrete walkways and outdoor lighting.

A landscape should include components of both hardscaping and softscaping. Too much concrete and the lawn looks cold and uninviting. Too many plants can cause a lawn to look overrun with uncontrolled growth. An unbalanced design runs the risk of compromising a home’s curb appeal, which can negatively impact property values: both yours and your neighbors’.
