Trees benefit your home and property. They add to the curb appeal and the property value. They provide shade for your home and protection for local wildlife.
No one wants to think about having to remove a tree from their property, and in almost all cases, it’s best to leave it there. But living under or near large trees can also be risky, especially if the tree is aged. Not unlike humans, trees can sometimes fall victim to disease. And eventually, they die. In these cases, it’s unsafe to keep the tree on your property, and it’s safer to have it removed. It’s important to know that a dying or dead branch or tree can fall at any time — not just during a storm.
If you notice that your tree appears or is behaving differently, reach out to our Johnson City ISA-certified arborists sooner rather than later. We are able to quickly identify any issues affecting your trees and will know the steps to take to remedy them.
Let’s look at a few places you can look around your tree to determine if it’s time to call in the professionals:
Look at the whole tree
Examine the tree for any strange appearances or behaviors. Is the tree leaning? Has it always had a lean, or is this new? A leaning tree could indicate a tree is dead or dying and may soon fall over.
Look at the ground
A tree’s roots can tell you a lot about the health of the overall tree. If the roots are visibly damaged or decaying, this indicates the tree has lost some or all of its structural support and is at risk of falling at any time. Does a space exist where the tree trunk meets the ground? This could suggest that a shift has taken place, the tree is leaning and now the tree is structurally unsound.
Our certified arborists in Bristol can examine the tree for fungus and/or “sawdust” at the base to determine if it has rotted or been eaten by insects.
Look at the trunk
Cracks or cavities in a tree’s trunk can indicate that a tree is no longer structurally sound. Cavities don’t necessarily mean that a tree must be removed, but they should be examined to note how deep they are into the tree’s trunk. Our certified arborists in Kingsport will know whether a cavity has become too large for the tree.
Trunks also provide the most obvious clues — like large pieces of missing bark — that a tree is dead, rotting, sick, or pest-infested.
Look at the canopy
Be on the lookout for dead branches on the tree. These branches are dangerous and oftentimes hard to spot. A branch with dead leaves or missing bark is usually a clear indication that the branch is no longer being supported by the tree.
