It’s time to get your lawn care in order and learn and plan for the upcoming seasons so that your lawn will be healthy and vibrant. Spring is upon us, and early bloomers are in bloom, but it’s not too late to prep and plant your garden beds for the spring’s rainy season or the summer’s scorching heat. So today on the blog, we share the Kingsport lawn care calendar that’s fit for all four seasons.
Why Lawn Care Is Important?
Maintaining your lawn serves several purposes. It enhances curb appeal, provides recreation space for you and your family or guests, and is good for the environment. A well-maintained lawn adds beauty and curb appeal. And whether you’re interested in selling your home or not, curb appeal can boost your property value. Additionally, creating a functional outdoor space provides many hours of relaxation in your backyard or a private space for leisure activities with family and friends. And of course, maintaining your lawn supports the surrounding ecosystem by fostering healthy insects and wildlife, which contributes to the local biodiversity.
What Does My Lawn Need During Each Season of the Year?
We’ve put together this comprehensive guide so that you can learn and understand your lawn’s maintenance needs throughout every season.
Spring
Springtime means cleaning up your lawn and garden beds to remove dead plants or any objects that don’t serve your lawn’s needs. This is also a great time to apply fertilizer and pre-emergent herbicides to control weeds. Depending on your grass type, you may also kick off mowing season and begin watering your lawn as needed. Typically, lawns require about 1-1.5 inches of watering a week, taking into account rainfall.
Summer
Our Kingsport summers can be hot and dry, which is why deep watering is essential if you want your lawn and garden to thrive. Deep water means watering your lawn infrequently for longer periods of time. This encourages deep root growth to help grass and plants sustain the hot, dry summer. Additionally, your lawn may benefit from a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer. Mowing during the summer should be done with care and consideration. You should not mow your grass too short. Instead, mow about one-third of the mow height that you’d mow in the spring and reduce foot traffic during the peak of the season, if possible. Additionally, be on the lookout for any issues or pests that you may notice that are harmful to your grass or other plants.
Fall
Fall lawn care prepares your lawn for the winter so that it will thrive the following spring. Remove debris, dead leaves, and limbs, and aerate to encourage root growth. You may also fertilize your grass during the fall with a high-phosphorus, low-nitrogen fertilizer that works best in colder environments. Fall is also the ideal time of year to overseed bare spots in your yard, gradually lowering your mower height, and reducing watering frequency to only about one inch a week.
Winter
During the cold, bitter winter, many grass types go dormant, and it may appear as though you have less lawn care work to do. But you should still maintain your lawn by removing debris or dead plants, leaves, and limbs. If you must mow your lawn, do so on the highest setting. Additionally, avoid walking on your grass if it is frozen. Some lawns may benefit from applying a winterizing fertilizer during this time of year. You should only water your lawn sparingly during this time of year. Also, if you normally grow warm-season grass during the summer, consider seeding cold-tolerant grass during the winter so that you can enjoy lush, green grass no matter the time of year.
