Trees are more than just ornamental. They also provide shade for homeowners, which is especially delightful during the hot summer months. Not only do shade trees create an inviting space outdoors for relaxing or entertaining, but it also can help reduce your energy bills by keeping your house cooler during the summer. However, it helps to know which trees to plant if you want enough shade, and how to care for those trees if you’re considering doing the job yourself. So today on the blog, our tree care experts at Promier Tree share three of the best shade trees to plant in Kingsport.
Redpointe Maple
Redpointe Maple trees produce a radiant red foliage during the fall, which you’ll enjoy gazing at from your window. The tree grows in a pyramidal shape and produces green leaves during the spring and summer, making it attractive for most of the year, except winter, win everything but evergreens go bare.
One of the best features of a Redpointe Maple is their adaptability for our zone in East Tennessee. They are one of the most common types of Maple trees in our area. Additionally, they are easy to grow and care for as they are resistant to pests and diseases because they can adapt and grow in soil with a high level of pH and grow just fine in our zone, considering our temperature variations. Unlike other tree species that require specific soil pH levels and climates to thrive. As long as the tree receives enough water during the drier months, you won’t have to provide much maintenance except on an as-needed basis to remove dead or damaged limbs.
Dawn Redwood Tree
The Dawn Redwood is perfect for homeowners looking for a no fuss tree to plant and grow in their yard. It offers gorgeous a fern-like feathery foliage that begins as light green during the spring and darkens during the summer. Its foliage turns a russet-brown during the fall, complimenting the vibrant colors of our East Tennessee fall landscape.
This tree requires no special care and is low maintenance, as it can even thrive in excessively moist soil. Therefore, consider planting a Dawn Redwood if you have areas of your yard that collect water during heavy rain or where the soil doesn’t drain well. This tree grows to nearly 50 feet, so plant it far enough away from homes and other structures to give it plenty of room to spread as it grows.
Eastern Redbud
Redbuds are medium sized trees and don’t require as much growing space as the aforementioned trees. The Eastern Redbud produces vibrant deep purplish-pink blooms during the springtime. They grow well in full sun or part shade, although bloom the best in full sun. Redbuds also adapt well to most any soil conditions, including clay, as long as it isn’t saturated. Redbuds also tolerate alkaline and acidic soil so these trees aren’t picky about pH levels.
You can give your Redbud a boost at the start of spring by fertilizing it. However, only prune dead, dying, or diseased branches after the blooming has ceased. Avoid pruning this tree during the winter, which could cause bloom loss. Most Redbud trees are fairly resistant to pests and diseases, although wet or humid conditions could lead to fungal issues, although it won’t kill the tree.
